IEC 61300-2-14:2021 describes a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic interconnecting device or a passive component to withstand exposure to the optical power which occurs during its operation. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - harmonizing IEC 61300-1:2016 and IEC 61300-3-4:2012; - addition of abbreviated terms; - addition of Clause A.2 regarding input optical power from both ends.

Abstract

Overview

IEC 61300-2-14:2021 is the IEC test procedure for assessing the ability of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components to withstand exposure to high optical power during operation. This fourth edition (2021) updates the 2012 version, harmonizing with IEC 61300-1:2016 and IEC 61300-3-4:2012, adds abbreviated terms and a new clause for input optical power from both ends. The standard defines test set‑ups, apparatus, severity parameters and pass/fail judgment criteria for optical‑power endurance testing of connectors, WDM modules and passive fibre components.

Severity parameters: optical power, wavelength(s), temperature, humidity and exposure time. Annex A provides example set-ups including WDM devices, series connections and both‑ends input testing.
Monitoring and pass/fail: active monitoring of insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) during exposure. Annex B gives examples of attenuation and return‑loss limits and criteria for judgment based on change.
