ISO 15732:2003 describes a test method for the determination of fracture toughness of monolithic ceramic materials at room temperature by the Single-Edge-Precracked-Beam (SEPB) method. This International Standard is intended for use with monolithic ceramics and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramics which are regarded as macroscopically homogeneous. It does not include continuous-fiber-reinforced ceramic composites. ISO 15732:2003 is for material development, material comparison, quality assurance, characterization, reliability and design data generation. Fracture toughness values determined with other test methods cannot be interchanged with KIpb as defined in this International Standard, and may not be interchangeable with each other.

Abstract

Overview

ISO 15732:2003 specifies a standardized test method - the Single-Edge-Precracked-Beam (SEPB) method - for measuring the fracture toughness of monolithic and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramics at room temperature. The standard defines the SEPB fracture toughness value K_Ipb, the specimen geometry and preparation, precrack generation, bending test procedures, validity checks and calculation/reporting rules. It excludes continuous-fiber‑reinforced ceramic composites. Typical uses include material development, comparison, quality assurance, characterization, reliability assessment and generation of design data.

- Surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.2 µm (excluding ends).
Specimen geometry & preparation:
- Rectangular beam specimens with specified sizes (referred to as specimen I, II, III), chamfering 0.12 ± 0.03 mm at 45°.
- Minimum of five specimens per test series.
Validity and reporting: Clauses cover validity checks (pop‑in behavior, compliance change), calculation of K_Ipb, and required information in the test report.
Non‑interchangeability: K_Ipb values from ISO 15732 are not directly interchangeable with fracture toughness values from other test methods.
