This document addresses the measurement methods, procedures and uncertainty estimation for the measurement, using a personal dosimeter, of the effective dose to the caregiver in the vicinity of the patient treated with radioiodine to ablate the thyroid. The general requirements for the patient and caregiver and a guidance (see Annex A) for designated expert on instructing caregivers of discharged patients is considered to effectively measure the effective dose to the caregiver in the vicinity of the patient.

Overview

ISO 18310-2:2021 specifies methods for measuring and estimating the external effective dose to caregivers of patients treated with iodine‑131 (I‑131) for thyroid ablation after hospital discharge. The standard focuses on practical dosimetry using personal dosimeters worn by caregivers, sets general requirements for patient release and caregiver interaction, and provides guidance (Annex A) and experimental application examples (Annex B). It also requires uncertainty estimation and quality control for measured doses.
