Overview

ISO 2286-1:2016 specifies standardized methods for determining the length, usable width and net mass of a roll of rubber‑ or plastics‑coated fabrics. It defines the required apparatus, measurement procedures and reporting elements used for consistent roll characterization in production, inspection and contractual verification.

Apparatus:
- Measuring surface: flat, horizontal, ≥ 5 m long and at least as wide as the roll; longitudinal edges marked in 1 m lengths with at least one section marked at 1 cm intervals.
- Measuring scale: longer than fabric width, graduated in millimetres.
- Balance: accurate to the nearest 100 g.
Length determination:
- Trim roll ends to be perpendicular to the roll axis (minimum trimming).
- Unroll without introducing tension, mark edges at fixed divisions, and measure sequential lengths along the measuring surface.
- Final length measured to the nearest 100 mm, unless otherwise agreed. The method is the referee method in disputes.
- Alternative mechanical, electromechanical or photoelectric measuring equipment may be used but can be unsuitable for extensible substrates (e.g., knitted).
Usable width:
- Measure while unrolled and free of tension at 10 m intervals using the measuring scale.
- Record to the nearest 5 mm; for rolls
