Overview

ISO 8501-2:1994 specifies a series of preparation grades for steel substrates after localized removal of previous paint coatings. It provides written definitions and photographic examples (with cross-reference to ISO 8501-1) to enable a consistent visual assessment of surface cleanliness prior to repainting. The standard covers surfaces prepared by common methods such as localized blast‑cleaning, hand- and power‑tool cleaning, and machine abrading and is intended for maintenance and repair situations where full removal of existing coatings is not required.
